The new Gorilla house at Twycross Zoo was an unusual departure for David Granger Design with much research and client discussion concerning the very specific requirements. The building provides fully contained accommodation for five Gorillas to complement the existing Gorilla house and accommodate new arrivals. The indoor play area is a two storey structure with no intermediate floor, fitted out by our client with rope swings, trees and platforms. This is a very controlled environment and a constant temperature is essential. The external area has been landscaped and provides a bath and a cave, as well as trees and other obstacles, with the barrier between animals and public formed by a deep moat, retaining wall and glazed balustrading.
