Cottage Row is a development of four semi-detached homes built on part of the former Ashby de la Zouch Cottage Hospital grounds. Lychgate Homes acquired the site in 2017 following the hospital’s closure some years earlier.
The original Victorian elements of the Cottage Hospital have been converted into offices. During the conversion, some inappropriate 1950s extensions to the rear were removed. This removal provided an ideal opportunity to create some dwellings which suited the quaint and historic architectural styles that exist along Range Road.
Although the developer wanted the homes to suit modern living and appeal to the current market, we felt the architectural detailing was also paramount. We designed the properties to reflect the building styles along Range Road, including bay windows, brick corbelling and appropriate chimneys, as well as sash windows with stone heads and cills.
The properties are three-storey, and each contains a spacious master bedroom suite as well as two additional bedrooms on the first floor. There is contemporary living space on the ground floor, which leads out onto an enclosed garden.
The properties received substantial interest during their construction, being opposite to Ashby School, and have been well received by residents. Due to the design and choice of materials, these new homes sit in harmony with their surroundings and compliment not only the neighbouring houses but the adjacent Old Cottage Hospital building.
